ViewSonic's HDTV lineup

LAS VEGAS--You can't swing a CES badge around without knocking over a LED TV this week, it seems. ViewSonic isn't doing much to help the situation as the debuted four new LED HDTVs during the show.

First up are the 18.5-inch VT1900LED and 32-inch VT3200LED. Both are 720p, Energy Star 5.0 compliant and offer a response time of 5ms.

The 42-inch VT4200LED and 23-inch VT2300LED feature full HD 1080p panel resolution, delivering the ultimate visual experience for HD movies and Internet content. In addition, the VT4200LED delivers 120Hz operation, fast 4ms response time, and a 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.Read more...

Perhaps it's time for optical drives again: The Gateway 11.6-inch EC14D

One of the more notable moments at CES this year for me wasn't a flashy new notebook announcement or a weird concept device demonstration. It was a quiet reveal at the Acer/Gateway suite of the upcoming Gateway EC14D, an 11.6-inch dual-core ULV mininotebook that has a DVD drive. It's a big deal, for several reasons.

Many readers have written in regarding laptop purchases they'd like to make, and it seems that the capability to play DVDs still ranks high on many lists. A laptop is often an entertainment purchase, and DVDs are still more widespread than any other video medium. On ultraportable devices such as Netbooks, DVD drives have been left off, mainly because of size and cost concerns. And, to those who value saving some money and having a smaller laptop, it's worth the compromise.

However, omitting DVD drives in larger "thin-and-light" machines may be a bit of a mistake. First off, nobody technically needs a thinner laptop. More compact is always nice, but cosmetics are secondary to value for a lot of people. Regardless, a trend seems to have been emerging in recent months: while early thin-and-lights such as the MSI Wind and MacBook Air were truly too thin for an optical drive, recent entries to the midrange category are getting a little bulkier, and clearly could have made room for one. Finally, the year of Android

LAS VEGAS--CES 2010 didn't produce quite a showstopper like last year's Palm Pre, but there's certainly one theme that dominated the show in the cell phone and smartphone categories and that's Android, Android, and Android. After a false start at CES 2009--last year's show defied expectations to produce no Android announcements--Google's OS finally emerged from its shell this year.

Of course, there was plenty of buzz about it even before CES started, after the official announcement of the Nexus One. Though neither Google nor HTC were officially showing the Nexus One in Las Vegas (thus making it ineligible for CNET's Best of CES Awards) it went on to be the buzz of the show. We posted our review from Sin City the day before CES began.

Beyond the Nexus One, AT&T committed to launching five new Android devices in the first half of 2010, including the Dell Mini 3. Motorola also introduced its latest Android smartphone, the Motorola Backflip, which won our Best of CES award in the cell phone category for its fresh take on design. We go our first hands-on with the Android-powered Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and we learned about OS updates to existing Moto handsets.

Outside of Android, Palm continued its tradition of making product announcements at CES and introduced the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus for Verizon. The company also unveiled details for WebOS 1.4, which will come out sometime in February and add video recording and Flash Player 10.1 for all WebOS devices. T-Mobile also made it official and said it will bring the HTC HD2 to its lineup this spring. Whatever your preference in OS, it looks like it's shaping up to be another busy year for smartphones.Read more...

Breaking the unbreakable phone

Leave it to the BBC to show us how it's done. At CES, BBC reporter Dan Simmons managed to break the display (click on the link for the video) on the seemingly indestructible Sonim XP3.2 Quest Pro. Simmons accomplished this feat after bashing the phone against the side of an aquarium in which it had previously taken a swim.

I have to hand it to Simmons. I've tested the previous Sonim XP3 Quest (we have our own video) and it survived whatever punishment we could throw at it. I dropped it 14.5 feet onto a concrete floor, I tried to hammer a nail into its display and I stood on a box with the phone underneath.Read More...

Is Taser's phone-monitoring product overparenting?

Taser International, the company that makes Taser guns to help law enforcement subdue unruly suspects, now has a product aimed at children. At CES, the company announced the Protector Family Safety Program--a series of products designed to help parents monitor and control what their kids are doing with their phones.

Lets parents listen in
Protector goes further than most parental control products in that it doesn't just provide a summary of activity--such as the incoming and outgoing numbers of people the kids call or text--but allows parents to listen to actual calls and read text messages.

Depending on how the product is configured, parents will be able to intercept all calls and messages to or from their child's phone, according to Steve Tuttle, Taser's vice president of communications. The series of products includes software parents can load on the kid's phone so that their own phone will, according to Tuttle, route "any inbound call, text, or e-mail. Anything that comes into the child's phone would actually be routed to the parent's phone." At that point, the parent can allow it, block it, send it through, listen in, or record the conversation. Parents can set a "favorites" list to let some calls and messages go through so, for example, the child can have unfettered and unmonitored communications with grandma or anyone else the parent specifies. Parents can also examine e-mail attachments--including photos--to help detect or prevent inappropriate incoming or outgoing images. Read More...

Take wireless charging on the go

WildCharger's products have always left us a bit divided. Though the wireless charging pads certainly work as promised, we haven't rushed out to buy them. Sure the ability to charge several gadgets at once is convenient, and the technology certainly is novel, but we can be content with powering our handset the normal way. Read More...

Microsoft releases 'sunset edition' of Money

Microsoft Money may be headed off into the sunset, but Redmond has one last version to offer those who are still using the personal finance product.

The so-called "sunset edition" of Microsoft Money was released earlier this month. Although it has fewer features--stripping out all of the online capabilities--this new version of Microsoft Money doesn't require activation, meaning that users who need to install it on a new PC or who lose their product code won't be stuck without their data.

"The Microsoft Money Plus Sunset versions are replacements for expired versions of Microsoft Money Essentials, Deluxe, Premium, and Home and Business," Microsoft said in a statement. "They allow existing customers to use MoneyPlus to continue accessing their data."Read More...

Yankees ban iPad

Wherever you feel the need to have your iPad, I am happy. So, it seems, is the TSA. The New York Yankees, though, seem to float on a different boat.

A report from Yahoo Sports suggests that the Yankees have decided in all their infinite, historic wisdom that the iPad falls under its "No laptops" policy.

Spacekatgal, a poster on the IGN boards and who first caught Yahoo Sports' attention, said: "The security people told me it was not allowed and I was turned away at the gates. Why on earth would they have this policy? Terrorism concerns? I couldn't get an answer. I snuck it in under my jacket...I bring it to Fenway all the time and they don't care."

Yes, Boston's hallowed home is renowned for its relaxed and friendly demeanor. And the old "under the jacket" trick was first perfected by Stephen Colbert at the Grammys read more...
